Austrian-born, Berlin-based Seethaler’s poignant novel opens in late summer 1966, with a protagonist who shares his given name, Robert Simon. More often called Simon, he was raised in a war home run by the Sisters of Mercy after his parents died. For most of his adulthood, he’s been lodging with the widow Pohl. At 31, Simon’s mostly content, working odd jobs, but when the local market café—situated in one of Vienna’s poorest and dirtiest neighborhoods—closes, Simon decides to transform his life and re-open the café. Despite remaining nameless, it quickly becomes a welcoming gathering place and a chance to assemble a beloved "found family." British voice actor Jones is a tender narrator, thankfully comfortable with various names, places, and phrases in German. He reads with thoughtful softness, making slight, effortless adjustments for conversations with friends, neighbors, customers, and passers-by; especially resonating are the encouraging butcher and first (and last) devoted employee Mila. In perfect sync, the triumvirate create a virtual aural hug.
