First off I’ll recommend the English writer Andrew Miller’s novel
Pure (winner of the Costa best novel award for 2011) as well as his
Ingenious Pain and
Casanova, all of which are set in the 18th century. Now Miller has written excellent novels set in other eras, but the 18th century is his summer cottage of the imagination if you will, the setting where his prose is most at ease, yet most sublime; most at home, yet most adventurous.
