In a Strange Room, which follows a young loner traveling through Greece, Africa and India, has been extraordinarily well-received by critics in the UK and beyond. The Times raved: "This is a wise and brilliant book." The Guardian called it "a beautiful book, strikingly conceived and hauntingly written, a writer's novel par excellence without a clumsy word in it." And The Globe and Mail wrote: "[Galgut's] powerful writing is honest and insightful, polished as it is to a marble-like perfection."
Galgut, who lives in Cape Town, South Africa, was previously shortlisted for the prize in 2003 for his novel
The Good Doctor.
