This week, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Michael Dirda, currently a book critic for the Washington Post, wrote an essay entitled "Jean-Claude Izzo: Noir under the Sun," which spotlights the Mediterranean author and his Marseilles Trilogy. In addition to reviewing four Europa titles—Total Chaos, Chourmo, Solea, and Garlic, Mint, & Sweet Basil—Dirda also recalls his own memories of 1970s Marseilles and the comparisons that Izzo's fiction evokes. Part literary criticism, part personal recollection, the essay pays tribute to the Mediterranean noir genre and its originating author.
