Three years after Caryl Ferey's 2010
ZULU was published by Europa, the novel's film adaptation closed the 2013 Cannes Film Festival on a thrilling note. Starring Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom as two South African policemen in the post-apartheid era, ZULU explores the shifting ideals of justice and loyalty as the two men team up to fight rampant gang violence. While Ferey's original novel focused on chief police officer Ali Neuman, director Jerome Salle splits the movie's screentime between Whitaker, the resilient and weathered chief investigating the murder of a white teenage girl, and Bloom's role as his tough, brash deputy.
Reviewers are already praising Whitaker's performance as Ferey's protagonist. The Hollywood Reporter highlighted his "deeply resonant performance" and the London Evening Standard calls the narrative "undeniably supercharged."
