Anniversary Editions

Europa 20 anniversary logo

Dear Reader,

This year we celebrate our 20th year of bringing the best international voices to American readers. Our first title, published in September 2005, was The Days of Abandonment by the then unknown Italian author Elena Ferrante and it marked a watershed moment in the culture of reading in this country. Since that time, we have shown time and again that a good story is a good story and that good stories can find readers here, no matter what language they are originally written in or where their authors hail from.

We certainly haven’t made it to the ripe old age of twenty all alone. The translators who have collaborated with us, the authors who have entrusted us with their work, the designers, editors, agents, critics, sales reps, and above all the booksellers, who from day one have been energetically championing the work of our authors, have all played vital roles over these two decades.

We’re celebrating our birthday by bringing out newly designed anniversary editions of 20 incredible books from these past twenty years—the books and authors that have made Europa what it is today, that have made history, our history. They represent not only the goals and aspirations of our publishing project but also the fruit of our relationships with those partners mentioned above. Each new anniversary edition has been redesigned and many also include extra content like author interviews and discussion guides. Some of them have been reader favorites since they were published—books like The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, or Old Filth by Jane Gardam. Others burned brightly when they were first published but due to the incessant barrage of new books in stores have in some cases fallen out of sight. Now they are back and thanks to the enthusiasm and energy of booksellers across the country, you’ll soon be seeing them in stores on table displays, face-out on shelves, and with dedicated sections. We’ll also be celebrating throughout the year with giveaways, limited-edition merchandise (did someone say tote bags?), special events, & more. Stay tuned!

There have been few moments over these past twenty years when I have felt that remaining open and curious about the experiences and stories of people beyond our borders was so important as it is now. So, I hope you’ll join Europa in celebrating twenty years of independent thinking and of reading the world.

Yours,
Michael
